UCSB has claimed the world record for lowest propagation loss in an optical waveguide through IPhOD technology.

The upcoming issue of Optics Express includes our paper on the subject, and is already available online (click to view):

"Planar waveguides with less than 0.1 dB/m propagation loss fabricated with wafer bonding".

Jared F. Bauters, Martijn J. R. Heck, Demis D. John, Jonathon S. Barton, C. M. Bruinink, Arne Leinse, René G. Heideman, Daniel J. Blumenthal, and John E. Bowers; Optics Express (2011), Vol. 19, No. 24

Abstract: We demonstrate a wafer-bonded silica-on-silicon planar waveguide platform with record low total propagation loss of (0.045 ± 0.04) dB/m near the free space wavelength of 1580 nm. Using coherent optical frequency domain reflectometry, we characterize the group index, fiber-to-chip coupling loss, critical bend radius, and propagation loss of these waveguides.

Jared Bauters entered a photograph of red light launched into one of our ultra-low-loss waveguide spirals for the IEEE Photonics Society's Image Search contest, and was chosen as the winner!

The image is currently posted on the Photonic Society's homepage: photonicssociety.org

The spiral was designed by Martijn Heck and the photograph taken by collaborators LiONiX BV, in Holland.
